“A death-dealing industry risking the lives of patients and staff to continue operating is the ultimate irony,” said Ruth Institute President Dr. Jennifer Roback Morse, Ph.D. “What part of ‘elective” in ‘elective abortion’ do these people not understand?”

Both the US Surgeon General and the Centers for Disease Control have advised healthcare facilities to reschedule non-urgent appointments and elective procedures. So far, attorneys general in Ohio and Texas have specifically ordered abortion clinics to close their doors during the COVID-19 crisis. The Ohio AG told clinics to stop “non-essential and elective abortions.” In Mississippi, a similar order was blocked by a federal judge.

Morse observed: “Not surprisingly, some abortion facilities have responded by saying abortion is an essential service because it’s ‘time-sensitive.’ Officials in Ohio and Texas issued these orders because abortion clinics put a burden on EMTs and ERs when something goes wrong, as it all too often does. But the abortion lobby will not be deterred. What’s saving the lives of coronavirus patients compared to taking the lives of unborn children?”

Morse continued: “I wish other states would take the bold steps that Ohio and Texas have taken. ‘Elective’ abortions are, by definition, not life-threatening. I hope the Ohio and Texas AGs will prosecute abortion facilities that defy the orders to close during this emergency. The recalcitrance of the abortion lobby underscores the fanaticism and totalitarian ideology behind the Sexual Revolution.”

“As I explained in my book, The Sexual State: How Elite Ideologies Are Destroying Lives and Why the Church Was Right All Along, abortion is a pillar of the Sexual Revolution, which holds that a good and decent society should do everything possible to separate sex from babies. If a child is conceived nevertheless, abortion is the failsafe.”

“In the abortion lobby’s mind, nothing must be allowed to interfere with unrestricted access to abortion – not even a pandemic in which it’s crucial to conserve medical resources for victims,” Morse remarked. “To the abortion lobby, the needs of COVID-19 patients are less important than the need to eliminate unborn children.”

The Ruth Institute is a global non-profit organization leading an international interfaith coalition to defend the family and build a civilization of love. Dr. Morse is the author of The Sexual State: How Elite Ideologies Are Destroying Lives.
