Getting Your Child Out of the Gender Cult--The Book Amazon Couldn’t Kill

Last week, Amazon blocked both the digital and print versions of Desist, Detrans, & Detox: Getting Your Child Out of the Gender Cult, but then relisted the Kindle version within 24 hours, possibly due to pushback from its initial decision.

Author Maria Keffler is the co-founder of Partners for Ethical Care, whose mission states: No child is born in the wrong body.

Ruth Institute president Dr. Roback Morse, Ph.D., said, “This book is an invaluable tool for saving children from the clutches of the transgender movement. For too long, the trans movement has recruited vulnerable and confused adolescents, convincing them that ‘this is the way you are, so get used to it,’ and talking them into life-altering, possibly irreversible, surgery and dangerous hormone therapy.

Desist, Detrans, & Detox shows there is another way. It uses communication and relationship-building skills to help children escape the gender trap once and for all,” Morse said. “The billion-dollar industry that sells mutilation and medication to those suffering from gender confusion hating and fearing a book like this is understandable. That’s why the Ruth Institute is pleased to recommend it to parents and other caregivers looking for compassionate answers.”

The Ruth Institute is at the forefront of the fight to expose and oppose the transgender movement. More information can be found at the Transgender Resource Center, including the pamphlet, “Your Pain is Real.”

Secretary of State Dismisses Findings of U.S. Commission on Unalienable Rights

Secretary of State Dismisses Findings of U.S. Commission on Unalienable Rights

“Secretary of State Anthony Blinken is typical of the Biden administration, which will push the Sexual Revolution at every opportunity,” Ruth Institute President Dr. Jennifer Roback Morse, Ph.D., said.

Blinken repudiated the work of the U.S. Commission on Unalienable Rights established by former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

“He took a gratuitous swipe at the Commission, calling it ‘unbalanced,’” Morse said. “Members of the Commission included distinguished academics and researchers. It was chaired by Harvard Law Professor and former Vatican Ambassador Mary Ann Glendon.”

Blinken said that in future reports, the State Department will emphasize “sexual and reproductive rights,” including LGBTQ.

Morse responded: “Perhaps Mr. Blinken could tell us where these words appear in the Constitution. He can’t, because they don’t. The name of the Pompeo Commission comes from the Declaration of Independence, which says that we were ‘endowed by our Creator with certain unalienable rights,’ among them ‘life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.’”

Morse added: “What Secretary Blinken calls ‘human rights’ (abortion and LGBTQ) are pseudo rights which are used to nullify authentic rights, including speech, religion and association. In the case of abortion, they deny the right to life of unborn children.”

Actually, the final statement of the Glendon Commission never mentioned the right to life or a child’s right to a relationship with its parents.

Morse explained: “In my testimony before the Commission on February 21, 2020, and in our petition which we presented at the time -- we urged the Commission to recognize the right of every person to know the identity of, and have a relationship with, their biological parents; the right to life from conception to natural death; and the right of parents to educate their children in their own faith tradition without being undermined by the state.

“What Blinken and the minions of the Sexual State object to are the concept of rights based on natural law, not on Supreme Court dicta or the ideology of the Sexual Revolution.

“The Secretary of State’s passion for this ideology will be reflected in attempts to force it on emerging nations in Africa and elsewhere, which have come to be known as cultural colonialism or ideological imperialism.” Morse warned. “This bears watching.”

In partnership with Life Petitions, the Ruth Institute circulated a petition in support of the Commission’s work which had such distinguished signers as Governor Mike Huckabee, Fr. Shenan Boquet (Human Life International), Jor-El Godsey (Heartbeat International), Steven Mosher (Population Research Institute), and Sharon Slater (Family Watch International).

Catholic Bishops Back Trans-Lobby, Ruth Inst. Requests Clarification

Catholic Bishops Back Trans-Lobby, Ruth Inst. Requests Clarification

“I’d like to ask the two Catholic bishops who released a statement condemning ‘discrimination’ against ‘transgender individuals,’ what exactly they mean by ‘discrimination’” said Ruth Institute President Dr. Jennifer Roback Morse, Ph.D.

The Human Rights Campaign recently released a letter signed by Archbishop John Wester of Santa Fe, NM, Bishop John Stowe of Lexington, KY, and other religious leaders. The letter states in part: “That we might not understand an individual’s experience, does not mean we are to discriminate against them, nor to tolerate any form of discrimination they might endure.”

“Everything turns on the definition of ‘discrimination,’” Morse said. “The letter doesn’t provide even a hint of a definition.

“For instance, when men who say they are women compete against biological women in sports, who is discriminating against whom?” asked Morse. “I’d like some clarification from Archbishop Wester. If we are to avoid all unjust discrimination, whose side do we take in this dispute? Why not stand in solidarity with the biological women who have trained for years and are losing access to awards and scholarships when they are routinely defeated by mediocre male athletes who say they’re women?

“What about the rapists who claim they are really women, and demand to be housed in an all-women’s prison? Tell us, Bishop Stowe, who most needs us to be ‘stewards of justice and mercy’: The men who say they’re women, or the women inmates who fear being raped?

“I’d like to hear the bishops speak out about the injustice of insurance companies who pay for the removal of healthy tissues but refuse to pay for ‘detransition’ health care. This sounds like discrimination to me. I wonder what Archbishop Wester and Bishop Stowe think,” Morse mused.

“If we stand with the perennial teaching of the Catholic Church, these thorny issues will not arise,” Morse said. A 2019 Declaration of Truth by Cardinal Raymond Burke and a number of other Catholic bishops is an authentic statement of Catholic doctrine. The Declaration calls transgenderism “a rebellion against natural and Divine law,” and considers it “a grave sin that a man may attempt to become a woman by mutilating himself, or even by simply declaring himself to be such, or that a woman may in like manner attempt to become a man, or to hold that the civil authority has the duty or the right to act as if such things were or may be possible or legitimate.”

“The trans movement is trying to force the public to affirm a lie: That an individual with male XY chromosomes is a woman because he says so,” Morse said. “Compelling people to treat men who say they are women as if they are actually women is itself a form of coercion and is inconsistent with human dignity.”

Morse concluded, “We await clarification from Archbishop Wester and Bishop Stowe on these important questions.”

Ruth Inst. Thanks Archbp. Naumann for Defending Catholic Doctrine

Ruth Inst. Thanks Archbishop Naumann for Defending Catholic Doctrine

Today the Ruth Institute presented a dozen white roses to Archbishop Joseph Naumann of Kansas City, Kansas, for his bold defense of Catholic doctrine.

“As head of the U.S. Bishops’ Pro-Life Committee, Naumann has courageously called out ‘pro-choice’ Catholic politicians,” Ruth Institute President Dr. Jennifer Roback Morse, Ph.D., stated. “This includes Pres. Biden and others who claim to be personally opposed to abortion, while doing everything possible to facilitate abortion and so-called LGBTQ rights, including transgenderism.”

In a recent interview, Naumann said, “I want to protect my people from being misled. [The president’s] actions, right now, do mislead. They do create confusion for people in terms of what the Church believes and teaches.”

“We applaud Archbishop Naumann for consistently articulating Catholic doctrine on moral questions,” Morse said. “Others in the Church have chosen to remain silent rather than confront a president who uses his token Catholicism to deflect criticism of his support for abortion on demand.

“The archbishop’s courageous advocacy has been condemned by certain self-styled Catholic groups, including one with an online petition demanding that Naumann be removed as head of the pro-life committee.

“In other circumstances, his critics might say that Naumann was ‘speaking truth to power’ – just as John the Baptist did when he rebuked King Herod for his moral transgressions.”

Morse noted that while professing to be a devout Catholic, “Biden’s administration is doing everything imaginable to support abortion and abortion funding (including repeal of the Mexico City Policy) and attack conscience rights.”

The Ruth Institute commends Archbishop Naumann as a Church leader who truly leads, regardless of the pressure to remain silent in the face of evil.

Morse explained that Roses from Ruth are “presented in gratitude for upholding the Church’s teachings on life, marriage and human sexuality.”

Past recipients of Roses from Ruth, which was started in 2016, have included Bishop David Walkowiak of Grand Rapids, Archbishop Charles Chaput of Philadelphia, Archbishop Alexander Sample of Portland, and Archbishop Charles Thompson of Indianapolis.

CNN Marches to Beat of Transgender Drummer

CNN Marches to Beat of Transgender Drummer

“CNN parrots the most absurd positions of the transgender movement,” said Dr. Jennifer Roback Morse, Ph.D., president of the Ruth Institute. “We should start calling it the PCNN, Politically Correct News Network. And they can’t even keep their own PC terminology straight.”

In a March 30 broadcast on South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem’s executive order on transgender males in women’s sports, the politically correct network editorialized: “The order also references ‘biological sex,’ a disputed term that refers to the sex as listed on students’ original birth certificates.” In the same broadcast, the network claimed, “It’s not possible to know a person’s identity at birth, and there is no consensus criteria for assigning sex at birth.”

Following substantial backlash, the Politically Correct News Network updated the story to “provide additional explanation as to the distinctions between gender and sex.” Their story now states, “It's not possible to know a person's gender identity at birth, and for some people, the sex listed on their original birth certificate is a misleading way of describing the body they have.”

Morse countered, “The Gender Theorists have inflicted this new terminology on all of us. The least they can do is to apply it consistently.”

Morse explained, “The term ‘sex’ refers to the body. The Sexual Revolutionaries invented the distinction between ‘sex’ and ‘gender’ to undermine the stability of male roles and females roles. ‘Gender’ is the term they use to describe the complex of social roles, personal preferences, feelings and identity. The Revolutionaries maintain that sex roles are socially constructed and can be reconstructed. This distinction allowed them to pursue their agenda of eliminating everything based on male-female differences, without having to maintain that the body is completely irrelevant. They’re saying: ‘All we want to do is provide more flexibility in gender roles. We accept that male and female bodies are different.’

“But now the mask is slipping,” Morse said. “They can’t keep their story straight. There absolutely is a criterion for ‘assigning sex at birth’: DNA, which is almost always immediately obvious from secondary sex characteristics. Of course, we can’t know a person’s ‘identity’ at birth, if that term includes everything they are ever going to think or feel. But that complex of feelings is not relevant to which sports teams a person should play on. The body is the only relevant consideration for that purpose.”

CNN’s attempt at clarification did not help. “CNN’s statement that ‘the sex listed on their original birth certificate is a misleading way of describing the body they have,’ is absurd,” Morse said. “The sex of the body has not changed. The individual has changed their ‘gender identity,’ not the sex of their bodies.

“This is CNN being CNN,” Morse said. “In a story last August on screenings for cervical cancer, instead of ‘women,’ it used the expression ‘individuals with a cervix.’ Increasingly, doctrinaire outlets like CNN, try to avoid saying ‘men’ and ‘women’ which are thought to exclude so-called transsexuals.

“CNN’s newscasts should come with a warning label: ‘No News Ahead. Propaganda Only. Some viewers may find the following broadcast upsetting.’”

Morse added, “Bias like this is one reason the Ruth Institute recently launched our Transgender Resource Center with research, media and other resources to fight the transgender ideology which permeates our society.”

Ruth Inst. Thanks Sharon Stone for Criticizing Cancel Culture

Ruth Inst. Thanks Sharon Stone for Criticizing Cancel Culture

“I would like to thank actress Sharon Stone for her support of free speech and her criticism of the Cancel Culture,” said Ruth Institute President Dr. Jennifer Roback Morse, Ph.D.

In a recent interview, Stone said, “I think the cancel culture is the stupidest thing I have ever seen happen. I think when people say things that they feel and mean and it’s offensive to you, it’s a brilliant opportunity for everyone to learn and grow and understand each other.”

Morse responded: “There are probably very few issues where the Ruth Institute agrees with Stone, who endorsed Biden in the last election. But she does understand that there’s nothing to be learned by shutting down your opponents. A healthy debate furthers the search for truth. The Cancel Culture erects a wall between opposing sides of any issue. The Ruth Institute and other pro-family organizations have been on the receiving end of this for a long time. We are glad to have Hollywood liberals like Sharon Stone as allies on this important issue.

“We feel so strongly about this that the Ruth Institute now has a Propaganda and Censorship Research Center to help fight censorship by big tech, big media and big government,” Morse disclosed.

Resources available at the Center include research like “How Unbiased are Fact Checkers,” a talk with James D. Agresti, president of Just Facts.

There’s also media like “Removed Book! A Talk with Brian Camenker, author of The Health Hazards of Homosexuality,” which was censored by Amazon.

And there are articles such as “Pepe Le Pew or Hugh Hefner: who normalized the rape culture?”

Morse explained: “A free society thrives on the free exchange of ideas. The Cancel Culture uses what it calls ‘hate’ to avoid a discussion of positions it has a hard time defending. It seems to be saying: ‘Don’t ask questions. Don’t challenge us. Just accept our word as law and shut up.’ I would like to take this opportunity to thank Sharon Stone for her fair-minded statement.”

Ruth Inst. Promotes Reality, Opens Transgender Resource Center

“Our Transgender Resource Center is an invaluable tool for those opposed to the transgender ideology,” said Ruth Institute President Dr. Jennifer Roback Morse, Ph.D.

“Transgenderism is a fraud. An individual can no more change his sex than his species. It’s imprinted in his DNA. A man born a man, and a woman born a woman, will remain such until the end of his or her life. Neither surgery nor hormone therapy will change that,” Morse said.

The opening of the Transgender Resource Center comes on the eve of the “Transgender Day of Visibility,” March 31.

“I’m not sure ‘Resource Center’ adequately describes what’s available here,” Morse said. “There are stories such as Maritza’s, who lived as a female to male transsexual for 17 years before detransitioning, as well as links to outspoken detransitioner, Walt Heyer, author of Trans Life Survivors.

“There are important interviews with doctors on the front lines, such as Dr. Michelle Cretella, who has analyzed gender dysphoria in depth, and Dr. Andre Von Mol, who successfully challenged the claim that surgery improved the mental health of gender dysphoric patients.

Dr. Erin Brewer tells her story of being sexually assaulted as a child, deciding that being a boy would keep her safe, and ultimately being protected from a lifetime of transgenderism by a sensitive therapist.

“We have resources for teachers and school administrators, such as the School Resource Guide from the Child and Parental Rights Campaign, and resources for parents, such as the Parent Resource Guide from the Minnesota Family Council.”

Morse added: “They’ll say we’re hateful for sharing these stories and providing these resources. But the transgender movement is doing irreparable harm, especially to impressionable adolescents, and that’s the ultimate form of hate. The truth may be unpleasant – even painful – but it’s never hateful. Denying reality is what causes the greatest harm in the long run.

“The significance of the transgender movement goes far beyond one piece of legislation, one nomination, or one day designated to celebrate transgenderism. It’s a movement that seeks to upend reality. That’s why the Ruth Institute’s Transgender Resource Center is so timely and so crucial for those fighting gender dystopia.”

Ruth Inst. Board Member Paul Jonna Named CA Lawyer of the Year

Paul M. Jonna, an attorney with the firm of LiMandri & Jonna in Rancho Santa Fe, CA, and a member of the Ruth Institute’s Board of Directors, was selected as a 2021 California Lawyer Attorney of Year in the Constitutional Law Category by the Los Angeles Daily Journal, an honor he shared with his partner Charles LiMandri.

Jonna and LiMandri were recognized for their outstanding work defending a San Diego church against Gov. Gavin Newsom’s order banning indoor worship during the COVID lockdown, treating houses of worship as “nonessential,” unlike retail establishments.

Eventually, the Supreme Court decided in a 6-3 ruling in February 2021, that the state had discriminated against religion by applying stricter standards to houses of worship than retail stores, in violation of the First Amendment.

Regarding the award, Ruth Institute President Dr. Jennifer Roback Morse, Ph.D., commented: “We are so proud of Paul and his association with the Ruth Institute. He’s been in the forefront of protecting constitutional rights against government overreach in high-profile cases involving religious freedom and the Sexual Revolution.”

Jonna represented a California bakery when the Department of Fair Employment sought to force it to make custom wedding cakes for same-sex couples.

He also represented investigative journalist David Daleiden who exposed a Planned Parenthood clinic’s sale of fetal body parts. The abortion industry seeks to punish Daleiden in ongoing litigation. Jonna is Special Counsel for the Thomas More Society in these cases.

On February 21, 2020, Paul Jonna was a guest on the Ruth Institute’s Dr. J Show discussing his work on the same-sex wedding cake and Daleiden cases.

On joining the Ruth Institute’s Board of Directors in 2019, Jonna remarked: “The Ruth Institute’s focus on defending the family and helping victims of the Sexual Revolution is more important than ever in today’s cultural climate.”

Jonna was selected by the San Diego Business Journal as one of the “Best of the Bar” for 2016 and 2017 and was named to the Super Lawyers’ 2019, 2020, and 2021 San Diego Rising Stars list.

Jonna previously worked at national law firms handling multi-billion-dollar cases for a broad range of large corporate clients. He earned a J.D. from the University of San Diego School of Law, where he was Comments Editor of San Diego Law Review, and earned a B.S. in Business Administration from the University of Southern California. He’s also a former three-term President and current member of the Board of the St. Thomas More Society of San Diego. Jonna also serves as the President of the San Diego Chapter of Legatus.

Ruth Inst. Coalitions Director to Speak at Kenya Life Symposium

Ruth Institute Coalitions Director Don Feder will speak at a Virtual Life Symposium sponsored by the Kenya Christian Professionals Forum (KCPF) on March 23, 9:00 am to noon, East Africa Time (ET plus 7 hours). Feder will speak on “The View from Sinai: A Jewish Perspective on Abortion.”

“Abortion and everything that goes with it is a repudiation of Judeo-Christian ethics, which started at Sinai,” Feder said. “It’s a reversion to bloody pagan times with human sacrifices, slavery and the ethic of might makes right.”

The virtual symposium is part of KCPF’s Life Week. The theme is “Man where are you?” (Genesis 3:9) Other activities include Life Sunday, March 21, on which church leaders, priests and pastors are encouraged to give sermons focusing on the protection of human life.

Patience Mutie Muthenya, KCPF Programs Manager explains: “For a long time, pregnancy and childbirth have been considered a woman’s affair. In the same note, abortion rights have been touted as women’s rights. The man’s role has been relegated to that of observer. This year, we are calling upon men to rise up and take their place – to rise up and protect women from rape, from abortions, and from the loss of lives due to hemorrhage during childbirth, through blood donations.”

Ruth Institute President, Dr. Jennifer Roback Morse, Ph.D. said, “We are proud to be partnering with the Kenya Christian Professionals Forum, which is doing such vital work to protect life and the family in Eastern Africa. We’re always happy to support the prolife movement in Kenya.”

Other speakers at the Virtual Life Symposium will include Richard Kakeeto (Catholic University of Eastern Africa), Dr. Wahome Ngare (Kenya Catholic Doctors Assn.), Dr. Jean Kagia (Protecting Life Movement Trust) and Aketch Aimba (Pearls and Treasures, a pregnancy resource center). Dr. Nagare was a guest on the Dr. J Show on December 18 to discuss the abortion issue in Africa.

Besides his work with the Ruth Institute, Feder was a syndicated columnist for 19 years. He also helped organize pro-family conferences and other events in the Caribbean, Latin America and Europe. In Africa, he’s spoken in Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa and Malawi.

Advance registration for the Kenya Virtual Life Forum is required.

Amazon is “Cancel Culture Central” says Ruth Inst.

Amazon is “Cancel Culture Central” says Ruth Inst.

Amazon’s latest ban is When Harry Became Sally: Responding to the Transgender Moment by Ryan T. Anderson. “Amazon is becoming ‘Cancel Culture Central,’” said Dr. Jennifer Roback Morse, Ph.D., President of the Ruth Institute. “They’re rapidly moving from selling books to the high-tech equivalent of burning books.”

A group of senators wrote to Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos asking for an explanation, since Amazon still carries a number of Anderson’s books and sold When Harry Became Sally from its publication in 2018 until just a few weeks ago.

When questioned, Amazon refers to its ill-defined standards, including a refusal to sell books considered “hateful.” Morse wondered, “Why weren’t these titles ‘hateful’ for the years Amazon offered them, but suddenly are now?

“How does a scientific debate violate Amazon’s sacred standards,” Morse asked. “The arguments in all of these books are presented dispassionately and backed by scientific data and expert opinion.”

Morse notes that the timing is suspicious. “Amazon dropped Anderson’s book on transgenderism the same week that Congress took up the so-called Equality Act, adding ‘transgenders’ to groups protected by civil rights law.

“This is not Amazon’s first episode of censorship,” Morse observed. “In 2019, they banned all books by the late Dr. Joseph Nicolosi, Sr., M.D., the father of reparative therapy. More recently, Amazon abruptly canceled the MassResistance book, The Health Hazards of Homosexuality, a book it helped to publish.”

Amazon is just the tip of the iceberg. In February, Twitter cancelled the account of Focus on the Family’s Daily Citizen for describing Biden’s nominee for Assistant Secretary for Health at the Department of Health and Human Services, Dr. Rachel Levine, as “a transgender woman, that is, a man who believes he is a woman.”

Morse said: “That description is fully in accord with biology. Amazon and the rest of the high-tech establishment want to pretend that the debate on transgenderism is closed. In fact, they’re terrified of a discussion because they know full well that there’s nothing scientific about a man ‘identifying’ as a woman. Did he somehow change his DNA?”

Morse noted that Amazon’s standards allow it to continue selling Hitler’s Mein Kampf. Morse explained: “Other than a few neo-Nazi crackpots, no one is influenced by Mein Kampf. A reasonable person reading scientific arguments against transgenderism just might be persuaded. The High-Tech Establishment is so committed to the transgender ideology, they won’t take that risk.”
