Ruth Inst. Board Member Paul Jonna Named CA Lawyer of the Year

Paul M. Jonna, an attorney with the firm of LiMandri & Jonna in Rancho Santa Fe, CA, and a member of the Ruth Institute’s Board of Directors, was selected as a 2021 California Lawyer Attorney of Year in the Constitutional Law Category by the Los Angeles Daily Journal, an honor he shared with his partner Charles LiMandri.

Jonna and LiMandri were recognized for their outstanding work defending a San Diego church against Gov. Gavin Newsom’s order banning indoor worship during the COVID lockdown, treating houses of worship as “nonessential,” unlike retail establishments.

Eventually, the Supreme Court decided in a 6-3 ruling in February 2021, that the state had discriminated against religion by applying stricter standards to houses of worship than retail stores, in violation of the First Amendment.

Regarding the award, Ruth Institute President Dr. Jennifer Roback Morse, Ph.D., commented: “We are so proud of Paul and his association with the Ruth Institute. He’s been in the forefront of protecting constitutional rights against government overreach in high-profile cases involving religious freedom and the Sexual Revolution.”

Jonna represented a California bakery when the Department of Fair Employment sought to force it to make custom wedding cakes for same-sex couples.

He also represented investigative journalist David Daleiden who exposed a Planned Parenthood clinic’s sale of fetal body parts. The abortion industry seeks to punish Daleiden in ongoing litigation. Jonna is Special Counsel for the Thomas More Society in these cases.

On February 21, 2020, Paul Jonna was a guest on the Ruth Institute’s Dr. J Show discussing his work on the same-sex wedding cake and Daleiden cases.

On joining the Ruth Institute’s Board of Directors in 2019, Jonna remarked: “The Ruth Institute’s focus on defending the family and helping victims of the Sexual Revolution is more important than ever in today’s cultural climate.”

Jonna was selected by the San Diego Business Journal as one of the “Best of the Bar” for 2016 and 2017 and was named to the Super Lawyers’ 2019, 2020, and 2021 San Diego Rising Stars list.

Jonna previously worked at national law firms handling multi-billion-dollar cases for a broad range of large corporate clients. He earned a J.D. from the University of San Diego School of Law, where he was Comments Editor of San Diego Law Review, and earned a B.S. in Business Administration from the University of Southern California. He’s also a former three-term President and current member of the Board of the St. Thomas More Society of San Diego. Jonna also serves as the President of the San Diego Chapter of Legatus.

Cancel Culture Has Us All in the Crosshairs Ruth Inst. Says

“This may be the greatest threat to freedom in America today,” Ruth Institute President Dr. Jennifer Roback Morse, Ph.D., said of censorship and the cancel culture.

Earlier this month, the pro-family group MassResistance discovered that its credit-card processing had been shut down. Supporters who tried to donate online were told their credit card was “declined,” with no further explanation offered. “For nine harrowing days, we worked to deal with this,” said MassResistance chairman Brian Camenker. Additionally, Amazon now refuses to sell the MassResistance book, The Health Hazards of Homosexuality, after offering it for several years.

Morse noted: “This has been going on for some time, but the trend has accelerated since the Capitol Hill riot last month. Conservatives have been de-platformed and lost speaking venues and book deals. Simon & Schuster violated its contract to publish Sen. Josh Hawley’s book, ironically titled The Tyranny of Big Tech.” However, the book will be published in May by Regnery.

“No one is immune,” Morse observed. “Focus on the Family, one of the largest pro-family groups in the nation, had its Twitter account locked. Their offense? A tweet pointing out that Dr. Rachel Levine, President Biden’s nominee for Asst. Secretary of Health, is a man who says he’s a woman. According to Twitter, acknowledging this biological fact is ‘hateful.’ That means reality is ‘hateful.’”

Morse continued: “Even President Trump has had his Twitter account locked for more than a month. The Tech Oligarchs aren’t afraid of the President of the United States. That tells you something about who really holds power in this country.”

Morse disclosed, “In 2017, the Ruth Institute temporarily lost our ability to process donations because of our opposition to the Sexual State. Vanco Payments said we were ‘flagged’ as a group with a product or service ‘that promotes hate, violence, harassment and/or abuse.’ If countering family breakdown and helping victims of the sexual revolution makes us ‘hateful,’ so be it.”

Morse called the censorship movement “nothing less than an attempt to enforce groupthink and avoid a debate on many of the most important issues confronting our society.

“It works this way: If you oppose same-sex marriage, you’re ‘hateful.’ If you oppose the destruction of women’s sports in the name of ‘equality,’ you’re ‘hateful.’ If you affirm that a man who says he’s a woman is still a man, you’re ‘hateful.’ And if you oppose administering cross-sex hormones to adolescents -- you’re just too hateful for words.’’

On Tuesday, March 2nd at 7:00pm EST, Morse will have a Facebook Live Chat with Brian Camenker and a representative of Focus on the Family to discuss censorship.

During the week of March 7-13, the Ruth Institute will launch its Fighting Censorship and Propaganda Resource Center.

Vatican Cover-Up Continues: Dr. J's Explosive Interview w/ Catholic Journalist Phil Lawler

On today’s Dr. J Show, veteran journalist, now editor of Catholic World News, Philip Lawler shares his insights on the newly released McCarrick Report, the Pope’s comments on same-sex marriage, the President of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops congratulating Joe Biden on the election, and the status of the Church in China. The show’s host is Dr. Jennifer Roback Morse, Ph.D., Ruth Institute Founder and President.

Of Pope Francis’s comments on homosexual marriage, Lawler observed: “The Pope wasn’t changing Church doctrine on marriage. He can’t do that. Unfortunately, his remarks provided an opportunity for journalists to misrepresent Church doctrine.”

Lawler agreed with a November 10th Ruth Institute release questioning the propriety of Archbishop Jose Gomez, President of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, congratulating Biden before the votes are fully counted and certified.

Lawler said: “There was no need for Gomez to say anything. He wanted to curry favor with the man who will likely be the next president.” Morse added: “Biden promises soft-persecution of the Catholic Church and abortion under all circumstances, paid for by taxpayers.”

Regarding the report on ex-Cardinal Theodore McCarrick’s sexual abuse, Lawler noted that the report is silent on important questions, including: “How did he rise through the ranks?” and “Who helped him?” Lawler said the only member of the hierarchy who comes off badly in the report, ironically, was Archbishop Carlo Vigano, former Apostolic Nuncio to the United States who blew the whistle on McCarrick.

McCarrick helped to negotiate the Vatican/China deal, whose details have yet to be made public. Morse charged, “It’s believed that the Pope will now select Chinese bishops from a list submitted by the communist regime. This comes at a time when the Church – both underground and official—faces increased persecution.”

The Dr. J Show is a weekly interview that features experts on issues relating to marriage, family and human sexuality. New episodes release every Friday.

The Man Who Exposed Forced Abortion in China a Guest on The Dr. J Show

Steven Mosher, author of Bully of Asia: Why China’s Dream is the New Threat to World Order, is this week’s guest on The Dr. J Show, the interview program of The Ruth Institute.

Dr. Jennifer Roback Morse, PhD., founder and president of the Ruth Institute, said, “We’re grateful for the opportunity to bring viewers this interview with Steven Mosher, the first person to expose the horrors of forced abortion in the People’s Republic of China. Decades before the communist regime exposed the world to the coronavirus, it was committing massive human rights abuses.”

In 1980, as the first Western social scientist to study in China, Mosher witnessed the regime’s one-child policy in action. He watched in horror as women in the seventh, eighth, even ninth month of pregnancy were dragged to an operating table to have a C-section abortion performed on them.

Mosher said this shocking experience made him pro-life, and his new pro-life stance cost him his doctorate.

Morse said, “Here in microcosm, is the whole story of US relations with the People’s Republic of China. Mosher’s advisors at Stanford University valued their access to research in China, more than exposing these human rights atrocities. Time after time, Westerners give China a ‘pass,’ so they can continue doing business there. This has been going on for forty years.”

Mosher also recounts his attempts to tell the president of the National Organization for Women about the appalling coercion of the Chinese Communist Party on women. The president of NOW responded, “Well, China does have a population problem.”

Morse stated, “Again, there is the story of highly-placed advocates of the Sexual Revolution ignoring human rights abuses. The claim that they defend a ‘women’s right to choose’ is a cover story, not a real commitment.”

Mosher subsequently abandoned a career as a social scientist and became a leader in the pro-life movement. Today he’s the president of the Population Research Institute.

“My interview with Mosher shows that the Chinese Communist Party has a long history of callousness and corruption even toward its own people, well before the recent COVID-19 catastrophe,” Morse said.

Each week on the Dr. J show, Morse interviews experts on issues ranging from surrogacy and “transgenderism,” to divorce, sexual abuse, pornography and other aspects of the Sexual Revolution.
