Abortion unbound

Sheila Liaugminas
If passed as written, health care ‘reform’ in America would expand abortion more radically than anything since Roe. Abortion activists first introduced the misnamed ‘Freedom of Choice Act’ (FOCA) with the help of Senate sympathizers in 1989 to create a fundamental right to abortion for all women, spread its access, and limit any government regulation, including any that even Roe v. Wade allowed. Twenty years and countless successes since then, the abortion movement put a sympathizer in the White House who had promised them he would sign that sweeping and radical legislation into law if elected.

Abortion industry bailout

Sheila Liaugminas

Besides the surprise revelation about restrictions on private health insurance (below), what else is in that 1,018 page health care bill that’s just coming to light?
Mandated taxpayer funding of abortion. FOCA has returned, under the cover of this bill. Pro-life groups and lawmakers are continuing to raise the alarm over the healthcare reform package President Obama is aggressively pushing through both the House and the Senate. The groups are urging Americans to oppose the healthcare overhaul, as pro-abortion lawmakers are insisting that abortion must be included in the basic healthcare package that all public and private insurers will eventually be required to cover. But they’re using stealth language.

Save the baby animals

Sheila Liaugminas

But by all means, keep it legal and easy to kill baby human beings. Or so says the abortion culture.
Years ago, I heard Fr. Frank Pavone of Priests for Life talk about seeing a sign posted on the beach warning that it’s a federal offense to kill baby sea turtles. And yet he’s devoted much of his adult life and his ministry to saving pre-born children from abortion. That came to mind when I saw a question in my inbox from my friend Linda asking if anyone could explain this.

Pro-lifers rally in Illinois to fight FOCA legislation

Charlie Butts - OneNewsNow

Pro-lifers in Illinois have successfully defeated Freedom of Choice Act legislation. The Pro-Life Action League had a major victory last week in the Illinois legislature where pro-abortion forces were trying to foist an Illinois version of the Freedom of Choice Act, or FOCA, onto the state. Eric Scheidler is a spokesman for the League.

Real freedom is information

Sheila Liaugminas

No matter what the “Freedom of Choice Act” calls itself, it’s restrictive to historic proportions. Choice can only be made with information, and people in South Dakota have been working for years to make it available by law, to women considering abortion. How else can they know what the choices are, for goodness sake?

Fighting FOCA with all he's got

Jim Brown - OneNewsNow - 1/30/2009

Senator David Vitter is vowing to do everything within his power to block the Freedom of Choice Act from moving forward in the Senate...

Vitter says the Freedom of Choice Act is not likely to come up for a vote in President Obama's first 100 days, but Democrats will be working to include provisions from that measure in appropriations bills. For example, he expects an attempt soon to eliminate the Hyde Amendment, which prohibits taxpayer funding of abortions.

You can sign the petition against FOCA at the website below. It'svery easy and takes about 15 seconds.
There is also an option to sign up for e-mail updates, including a processfor contacting your congressional representatives about this legislation. Please pass this along to others.http://www.fightfoca.com/

Obama condemned for expanding taxpayer funded abortions

Making sure there’s still a choice

by Sheila Liaugminas

President Bush has secured, for now, the rights of health care workers to exercise their conscience in practicing medicine morally, while all around the country liberal activism pushes to allow only one choice: theirs. The right of conscience must be protected if we are not to be a socialist state.

The rules make it so medical centers and staff aren’t forced to do abortions or refer for them. They provide better enforcement for existing federal laws by potentially revoking federal funding from violators and making them certify in writing that they will respect conscience rights.

But these rights are unacceptable to the ‘choice’ crowd, who want their choice made law. Attorney General Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut says he will lead a fight against the federal rule and is expected to file a lawsuit against it.

Though the new regulations have nothing to do with birth control, Blumenthal is echoing the arguments from leading pro-abortion groups who claim its access will be adversely impacted by them.

He said he will resume working with pro-abortion officials in the other states to derail the pro-life protections for medical centers and staff — slated to take effect on January 20.

Of course, that’s inauguration day. So what will happen to conscience clauses after that? Here’s some cause for concern:

In April 2007, Senators Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, along with other pro-abortion legislators, re-introduced what is called the Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA). Denise Burke, legal counsel for Americans United for Life, describes FOCA as “a radical attempt to enshrine abortion-on-demand into American law.” The National Right to Life Committee describes FOCA as an attempt to “invalidate all limits on abortion.” Barack Obama has pledged his support for FOCA and promised Planned Parenthood that if he was elected president, he would sign FOCA into law if the legislation reached his desk.

Amazingly, many Americans still don’t know about the Freedom of Choice Act, a misnomer to beat them all. Here’s a re-cap…

If abortion is established as a “right” on par with the freedom of speech and freedom of religion, no American citizen will be able to object to any woman’s plan to have an abortion. FOCA puts the “right” to abortion on a collision course with the First Amendment rights of freedom of religion and freedom of speech. As [Denise] Burke states, FOCA is “a radical attempt to prematurely end debate about abortion.” Thus, not only can we expect abortions to increase in this country—despite the fact that abortion proponents often call abortion a “tragedy” and something they would like to see decreased in incidence—but no healthcare provider will be able to conscientiously object to a woman’s request to have an abortion. Healthcare providers, then, will be forced to go against their religious and ethical beliefs, or they will have to leave their professions.

Further likely consequences…

To name a few, FOCA will nullify the legal protections that have been afforded to Catholic hospitals, force all medical students to train to perform abortions, overturn parental notification and informed consent laws, and force American taxpayers to fund abortion, which many find morally objectionable.

Nurse and bioethics expert Nancy Valko, a friend, passed along this letter she sent to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch:

Dear editor, As an RN of almost 40 years experience, I am shocked that a St. Louis Post-Dispatch editorial (”An unconscionable conscience rule” December 24, 2008) would state that doctors, nurses and pharmacists with ethical objections to participating in certain procedures or treatments just “should choose another profession.” This is not just about abortion. Legalized assisted suicide has just been passed in Washington state in addition to Oregon. Missouri has seen similar efforts. Should we then just choose another state?

And as a recipient of health care for almost 60 years, I am more than nervous about accessing a health care system solely populated by doctors, pharmacists and nurses who are comfortable with ending life.

We have enough problems as it is with medical ethics. We deny conscience rights at our own peril. Sincerely,Nancy Valko, RN

Unlike the citizens of Nazi Germany, who didn’t know the extermination had already started in the hospitals, we have been warned.

Less than 10% believe abortion should be legal, unfettered

Charlie Butts - OneNewsNow - 1/6/2009

A nationwide survey commissioned by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops underscores the public view of abortion. The poll involved a cross-section of Americans -- not just Catholics -- and assistant director for policy and communications at the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops Deirdre McQuade has part of the results.

"Four out of five American adults -- 82 percent -- think abortion should be either illegal under all circumstances or with limited legality, and only nine percent said that abortion should be legal for any reason at any time during pregnancy," she explains.

McQuade contends the results ought to send a message to Washington as the most pro-abortion president America has ever had is about to be sworn into office.

"It shows that the Supreme Court is out of touch with mainstream America," she contends. "It shows that, certainly, [the] pro-abortion advocacy groups are out of touch with mainstream America, even out of touch with people who describe themselves as pro-choice."

Three-fourths favor parents having a role in a minor's attempt to obtain an abortion, and nearly two-thirds support laws against partial-birth abortion. McQuade hopes to have a copy of the survey on the desks of the upcoming president and each member of Congress.

Catholic Bishop: "Go Right Ahead and Arrest Me" Rather than Obey Freedom of Choice Act

ARLINGTON, Virginia, December 2, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Bishop Paul Loverde of the diocese of Arlington weighed in on the Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA) last week, saying that if he oversaw a Catholic hospital he would neither close the facility nor allow it to perform abortions if FOCA were to become law.

Though there are currently no Catholic hospitals in the Arlington diocese, the bishop spoke defiantly against FOCA, which would force all health care providers to procure abortions at any stage of development, regardless of their moral or religious objection.

"I would say, 'Yeah, I'm not going to close the hospital, you're going to arrest me, go right ahead," Bishop Loverde told a group of mostly young adults at a diocesan event, according to a CNS report.

"You'll have to drag me out, go right ahead. I'm not closing this hospital, we will not perform abortions, and you can go take a flying leap.'"

At a 2007 Planned Parenthood conference, Obama promised that one of his highest priorities as president would be to pass FOCA, rendering illegal all state and federal limits on abortion. This would include abortion clinic regulations, parental notification requirements, bars to taxpayer abortion funding, and the partial–birth abortion ban, in addition to laws protecting doctors' rights to conscientious objection.

"It's quite a title, let me tell you," Bishop Loverde said of the Freedom of Choice Act. "It's a misnomer, it's neither free nor choice, so I don't know where they got the name of the act, because it's just crazy, because it has no freedom, and it has no choice."

Catholic and pro-life voices have raised the alarm on the unprecedented danger the bill represents for unborn Americans, with Catholic officials particularly concerned that U.S. Catholic hospitals will be forced to close en masse in the face of mandatory abortion.

Chicago Cardinal Francis George, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), issued in November a statement on behalf of all Catholic bishops warning Obama that "aggressive pro-abortion policies, legislation and executive orders will permanently alienate tens of millions of Americans, and would be seen by many as an attack on the free exercise of their religion."

One unnamed senior Vatican official recently told TIME magazine that the passage of FOCA would mean "the equivalent of a war" between Mr. Obama and the Catholic Church.
